National Biathlon Success

Tuesday, April 9, 2019

Oldbury Wells had an amazing six competitors take part in the British School's Modern Biathlon Championships in Crystal Palace on the weekend of the 16th and 17th March. The students earned their places by accumulating enough points to qualify for the event from previous regional competitions earlier in the year. This meant that they went to represent Oldbury Wells against the other best runners and swimmers from across the country. We had competitors in U12 boys, U13 girls, U14 boys, U15 boys and U16 girls categories, all of whom finished in the top 34 places in their group. This is an outstanding achievement as some of the age categories had over 105 competitors in total!

There were also two top 10 performances with Jake Fretwell finishing in 10th place out of 104 in the U12 boys. He came first in the 50m swim with a smashing time of 29.08 secs after a fabulous run of 2 mins 48 secs in the 800m. This was followed by a fantastic first place for Daniel Galloway in the U15 boys category, where he was also competing against boys a school year above him! Daniel also came second in the 1600m run with a time of 4 mins 43 secs and 6th in the 200m swim in 2 mins 12 secs.

Congratulations to all six of our fantastic performers – Jake and Daniel as mentioned, Elliott Fellows, Rhys Blower, Francesca Davies and Jess Knowles. We wish them the best of luck going forward into the next year.
