Silver DofE

The Silver Award can be completed by students in Year 10. Students who choose to complete the Silver Award must complete 4 sections, similar to the Bronze: volunteering, physical, skills and expedition. However, for Silver the volunteering section must be completed for 6 months, whilst the other two sections must be completed for either 3 or 6 months. Participants can choose which of the two sections they wish to complete for longer.

  1. Volunteering (6 months) – See details under Bronze Award. This can be the same activity or different to that completed at Bronze level.
  2. Physical (3/6 months) – See details under Bronze Award. This can be the same activity or different to that completed at Bronze level.
  3. Skills (3/6 months) – See details under Bronze Award. This can be the same activity or different to that completed at Bronze level.
  4. Expedition (navigation day, 2 day/2 night practice expedition and 3 day/ 2night qualifying expedition) - participants complete an expedition in rural countryside, which should be unknown to them. Previously this has been completed around the Long Mynd. Participants are trained in campcraft, route planning and first aid during spring term, by trained school staff. To ensure a high quality expedition is offered, we run expeditions using an external accredited activity provider, Chase Training Solutions. Their mountain-leader trained staff organise and run a navigation day, practice expedition and qualifying expedition. This is supported pastorally by school staff. Expeditions are completed in groups of 4-7, with each group planning and following their own routes. Expeditions usually take place during the summer term.

Students who haven’t completed the Bronze are eligible to be a direct entrant, however they should speak to Miss Ransom as extra requirements must be met to complete the Silver. Enrolment runs for 2 weeks during the autumn term. Letters should be returned directly to Miss Ransom or Miss Edwards by the deadline date.

Due to the use of an accredited activity provider, the cost of the Silver award is higher than the Bronze. Thanks to funding, we are able to offer the Silver for £275 (subject to change each academic year depending on cohort size). This is paid in four instalments. If cost of the Award is a concern, please speak to Miss Ransom, as extra funding may be available.
